About the Publication

This “Manual” is published to provide a resource to the state and federal regulations that affect the privacy, security and disclosure of a patient’s health information.  In previous editions, AAHIM has included a section on “Recommended Policies and Procedures”.  However, with the implementation of HIPAA of 1996, health care organizations have developed extensive polices and procedures to ensure compliance with the privacy and security regulations regarding disclosure and accounting of disclosures.  The “Recommended Policies and Procedures” sections have been deleted and a new section entitled “Resources” has been added.  This new section provides links to various government and professional websites and also contains sample forms in appendices to several chapters.
